Myths About Engagement Rings

Posted on March 17 2021

When it comes to engagement rings, the general knowledge behind it comes from old traditions and what’s been portrayed in the media. We all have an idea about what’s expected surrounding proposals and rings, but are any of them actually true? Not in the slightest, which is why we’re here to debunk some of the most common myths surrounding engagement rings.

It Needs to be a Surprise
Proposals are synonymous with surprise engagement rings, but that doesn’t have to be the case. While an unexpected proposal can be romantic, you can still surprise your significant other and have them help in the selection of the ring. There are many ways this can happen, including proposing without a ring so you can pick one out together, or have your partner choose a design they like. However you choose to do it, you don’t have to stress yourself out with worry about picking the wrong ring.

It Needs to be a Diamond
Perhaps it’s because of its durability or simply its value, but it seems like diamonds are the only acceptable stone of choice when it comes to engagement rings. However, like many things on this list, that’s just not the case. You can choose whatever stone you please, whether it’s a diamond, emerald, sapphire, topaz or simulated stone.

It has to be Expensive
With the wide variety of options out there in the world of engagement rings and wedding bands, there’s no reason to spend three month's salary on a ring. Save that cash for the actual wedding and purchase a ring that feels right.

The Bigger the Ring, the Better
People are often taught to believe that bigger is better. However, that doesn’t have to be the case when it comes to engagement rings and stones. There are many factors that attribute to the overall quality and effect of the gemstone, meaning that size should only be one of the mechanics, and a small one at that. Focus your budget on quality rather than size.

It can only be Worn on the Left Hand
Other than a tradition in certain cultures, there’s no scientific reason why an engagement ring or wedding band needs to be worn on your left hand. Part of the reason many believe the ring needed to be worn on the left ring finger is because many say there's a vein that connects the ring finger directly to the heart. Your engagement ring can be worn on whatever finger you or your partner desire.
