The Difference Between Engagement Rings and Wedding Rings
Posted on March 17 2021
The difference between a wedding ring and an engagement ring might seem obvious to those who’ve spent their time around them, but for others, the difference might be more obscure. Not to worry, as we’re going to clean the air regarding what makes an engagement ring distinct from a wedding ring.
The Big One
Wedding rings and engagement rings, is there really much of a difference between the two? In fact, there are two main differences between the rings, their styles and the timing in which they’re received. Traditionally, an engagement ring is given from one partner to another at the time of the proposal. On the other hand, wedding rings are exchanged by the couple during the wedding ceremony. Now, when it comes to style, wedding rings and engagements look vastly different. Engagement rings typically feature a larger, centre stone attached to a band made of some kind of metal. Wedding rings are more simple in design, featuring just a plain metal band that can be adorned with small gems or a personal engraving.
What to Buy First?
If you’re going for the traditional route or aren’t too sure what your partner’s response to the proposal will be, you’ll buy the engagement ring first, propose and then choose the wedding rings out together. However, every couple is different, meaning that purchasing both rings at the same time is the best way to go, especially if you know your partner would appreciate having a matching ring set.
Getting a Matching Set?
Having a perfectly matching engagement ring and wedding ring isn’t necessary. Again, it all depends on the individual. If they’re planning on wearing the rings together on a daily basis, then getting a matching set may be important when it comes to consistency. Are they planning on wearing just their engagement ring or only their wedding ring after the wedding? If so, getting a matching set won’t matter.
What do You Wear After the Wedding?
Like a lot of what’s on this list, this is an entirely personal choice. It’s common for most people to wear both their engagement ring and wedding ring together once the wedding is over, but there are several reasons that that’s just not the case. Maybe they don’t match, or maybe it’s more comfortable wearing a single ring. Whatever you decide, the choice is up to you.
